Email it out piece by piece over a week and nobody can tell which version is the live one. A data room keeps it all behind a single link that's always current.

The room grows with the raise
Just the deck, sent to a list and tracked.
At pre-seed it's mostly the deck. Send it to a list of investors with tracking on each one, see who actually gets past slide five, and chase the partners who are reading instead of the ones who never opened it.
Pre-seed
Per-investor read tracking, not just open/click
Bot filtering so previews don't count as reads
Return-visit alerts when an investor comes back the next day
Free plan covers most pre-seed raises

More than a folder of PDFs
01 · Upload, organize
Drop everything in,
then group it by section.
Drag and drop the deck, financial model, cap table, references, and legal docs into one room, then group them under tabs and sections so partners aren't left hunting. If something changes mid-raise, reupload it without touching the link.

02 · Embeds
Founder Looms, Calendly,
and investor forms.
A deck just sits there, but a room doesn't have to. Embed a founder Loom intro, a Calendly for partner calls, a feedback Typeform, and tracked links to anything else on Drive.

03 · Inline decisions
Accept the NDA or request changes,
right in the room.
Mark any document for accept, decline, or request-changes, and investors respond inline against their verified email. Nothing has to get roundtripped as a PDF or forwarded around for signature.

04 · Diligence plan
A shared plan with the partner.
From the first call through the financials review, the IC pre-read, the term sheet, and close, the whole diligence plan lives in the room. Both sides check off steps and can see what's coming next.

05 · Per-investor analytics
Which partner read which page,
and for how long.
You get read-throughs, time-on-page, completion rate, and page-by-page heatmaps for every investor. Sarah, a partner at Sequoia, spent 12 minutes on the financial model across 8 tabs, then jumped straight to the cap table.
When a partner shares the deck inside their fund, you watch each new viewer show up: the associate skimming it, the partner who has now opened it three times, the IC member who came back the next morning to re-read the financials.
A return visit from the same investor usually means an internal conversation is happening.
When the room is restricted to an allowlist, every viewer ties back to a verified email, so you can see it's the individual reading rather than just the firm.

DocSend is the best-known option for founder data rooms. HummingDeck differs in a few places, like return-visit alerts, bot filtering, embedded Calendly and Loom, and a free plan that covers most pre-seed raises. Which one fits depends on what your round needs.
Comparison reflects publicly advertised features as of June 2026 and may change. An X means the capability is not publicly advertised, not necessarily missing. DocSend is a trademark of its respective owner; HummingDeck is independent and unaffiliated.
A data room that tells you who's reading.
Most data-room tools tell you a link was opened. HummingDeck shows you which partner actually read it, page by page, so a quiet open and a close read never look the same. That gap is what tells you where the conversation is really heading. Why your deck analytics are wrong covers what to look for instead.
Access control
Open for the pitch, locked for diligence.
A room isn't all-or-nothing. Keep it open while you pitch cold, ask for an email when you want names, then lock it to a verified allowlist once the financials and cap tables go in.
Access · Open
Open for cold outreach
At pre-seed the deck stays open. Anyone with the link reads it, no signup and no friction, and you still see every viewer and the slides they reach.
No login or email needed to view
Per-investor read tracking still works
Best for cold outreach and early pitches
What your investor sees

No signup, straight to the room
Every viewer still tracked
Restricted access is available on Pro and Business plans
Real-time alerts
Know the moment
a partner opens the room.
Get pinged the moment an investor opens the room, reads a doc, or comes back the next day, so you know when to follow up instead of guessing.
Slack alerts
A message lands in your channel the moment a partner opens the room or reads the financial model, so you're not stuck refreshing a dashboard.
Email digests
Get a daily summary of who opened what, ranked by engagement. It still reaches you on the days Slack stays muted.
Webhooks and CRM
Pipe room activity into Affinity, Attio, HubSpot, or any pipeline tracker via webhooks and Zapier.

What's the difference between a pitch deck tracker and a data room?
A deck tracker shares a single document, while a data room shares many of them behind one link: deck, financial model, cap table, references, and legal. HummingDeck does both, so you can start with the deck for cold outreach and switch to a full room once conversations get serious.
What goes in a startup data room?
At seed: deck, financial model, cap table, customer references, team bios, and a mutual NDA. At Series A, add the legal pack, IP assignments, customer interview transcripts, and security questionnaires. That covers what most funds expect to see.
Do investors need a mobile app?
No. The viewer works in any browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. Investors don't install anything. Mobile reads attribute the same way as desktop, with the same per-investor tracking and heatmaps.
How secure is the data room?
Documents are encrypted at rest and in transit in Google Cloud Storage. Access is controlled with verified-email allowlists, expiration dates, per-recipient download toggles, and revoke-anytime links. We're not SOC 2 certified. If your diligence requires a formal security review, reach out and we'll walk you through our setup.
How does HummingDeck compare to Carta data rooms?
Carta is built around cap-table management, with a data room that sits alongside your cap table. HummingDeck doesn't replace Carta. Drop a Carta export into the room as a PDF and the diligence pack stays current. HummingDeck adds per-investor analytics, embedded Loom intros, and Calendly partner-call booking that Carta doesn't.
Can I restrict access to specific partners only?
Yes, on Pro and Business. Add the partner emails that should have access. Anyone outside the allowlist can't request a verification link. Add or remove addresses any time without rotating the room URL.
Can I revoke access mid-raise?
Yes. Remove an email from the allowlist and the next page load locks them out. Useful when a partner passes or the conversation moves on.
How do I handle multiple partners at the same fund?
Add each partner's email separately. Each one verifies through their own inbox, so analytics attribute to the individual, not the firm. You see which partner read which doc and when.
Can funds use HummingDeck for LP updates and portfolio sharing?
Yes. Funds use HummingDeck to share quarterly LP updates, portfolio summaries, and co-investor diligence packs. Same restricted-access controls, same per-recipient analytics. Both sides of the deal use the same product.
What about M&A diligence?
M&A teams use HummingDeck to organize the diligence pack, restrict access by acquirer, and track which corp dev contact reads what. Per-recipient revoke and audit trail come standard.
Can I upload my financial model directly as an Excel file?
Yes. Drop your .xlsx or .xls file straight into the room. Investors view it tab-by-tab in the browser with charts, formatting, and merged cells preserved. Same per-page analytics as the deck: which partner spent two minutes on the ARR build, which tab they jumped to first. PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, HTML, and Google Docs/Slides are all supported.
